ROBERT DANIELIS (1953 - )

Born in Toronto, Robert Danielis spent 25 years in Prince Edward County and was artist-in-residence at the Waring House for many years. He moved to Nova Scotia 11 years ago, drawn by the province's rich folk art tradition. A self-taught artist who has been carving since childhood, Danielis works from instinct, curiosity, and a lifelong love of making things. Working primarily in pine and cedar, he often laminates pieces of wood together and incorporates found objects to give each sculpture its own character. He has used horsehair in his work and, on occasion, even his own hair. Danielis's distinctive painted surfaces reflect his early experience building antique reproductions and his connection to Homestead House milk paint, where his research into historical formulas helped spark the company's original direction. That interest in traditional finishes continues to inform his folk art practice, which is marked by humour, invention, and a deep respect for handcrafted materials.
