Braxton Ponder was born on a farm in rural Arkansas in 1915. At the age of 21 he left to see the world, travelling all 48 states, Canada and Mexico. He married in 1942 and served in the U. S. Army during WWII. In 1965 he and his wife eventually settled in Nauvoo, Alabama, where they purchased a grocery store.
Braxton did not take up carving until age 71, following his retirement from the grocery business. Using mainly spruce or cedar, Braxton first cut out the basic shape of his carvings on a jig saw, and then finished them using a pocket knife. One of the delightful aspects of his art is the use of found objects, and a close examination often reveals the incorporation of items such as small tacks and nails, rope, bottle caps and bits of wire.
