Peter has a background in boatbuilding and carpentry. He always loved carving as a child and took it up again in the early 1990s. Shortly after he resumed carving, he was recognized by the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival Society, and was invited to participate in a number of their folk art festivals. He carved everything from small animals to full size carousel horses. He made several whirligigs before he retired and moved to British Columbia.
