Joyce worked in the fishing industry before taking up knitting and crochet work, and then moving on to carving. Initially, her work was primarily relief carvings of animals and birds, and some small carvings in the round. In later years she mainly concentrated on painting. She participated in several Nova Scotia Folk Art Festivals.
