LAURA KENNEY (1965 - ) |
Laura Kenney was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan but her roots are in Nova Scotia, and she has resided in the province for the over 25 years. She has lived in many towns and cities across Canada as well as Germany and Japan and now resides in Truro, Nova Scotia. Rug hooking has a long tradition of artistic production in Nova Scotia and Kenney's work bridges the lines of fine craft, contemporary art and folk traditions. She uses humour and an alter-ego named Judy to comment on social issues. Kenney received juried status with the Nova Scotia Craft Council in 2010 and has been a Folk Artist with the NS Folk Art Festival for the past 15 years. Her work "Morning Routine" and "Waiting for the Cat to Let her Out" was purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank and a selection of Kenney's work was included in "Terroir", a survey of art in Nova Scotia at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Kenney's show "Judy" travelled to Cape Breton, Acadia and STFX Universities in 2022-2023 as well as The Art Gallery of Northumberland in Ontario. Laura Kenny's work was recently included in "Border Crossings" and the new book Nova Scotia Folk Art : An Illustrated Guide by Ray Cronin now available for order at Nimbus Publishing at this link.
